According to the EU, the reforms will save an estimated EUR117.3m (US$161.7m) in reduced EU subsidies from 2008 to 2013.

However, the European Parliament agriculture committee said an assistance fund would provide dairy producers and processors with a soft landing, without excessive cost.

The committee called for a milk fund restructuring programme, which would draw cash from anticipated savings from 2008 in order to help producers and processors cope with market liberalisation and the loss of protective quotas.

It also called for an increase in the promotion of information about the nutritional aspects of dairy products.
