Australian supermarket operator Woolworths has posted an 8.4% rise in first-quarter sales from continuing operations, but pointed to weak growth in its food and liquor division.

Total sales from continuing operations were A$7.1bn (US$5.0bn) for the first-quarter to 5 October, with the company’s food and liquor division contributing $5.7bn, a rise of 2.8% compared to the previous year.

Woolworths’ supermarkets division, made up of the food and liquor division plus the petrol business, posted sales up 7.9% to $6.2bn, reported Reuters.

Woolworths has around 38% of Australia’s $65bn retail food market, while its main rival, Coles Myer, has around 31%.
