A recent survey into the performance of the Internet operations of the UK’s top supermarket chains wasted no time advising consumers not to waste their’s with Sainsbury.

Sainsbury’s online shopping facility, Sainsburystoyou.com, was awarded only one out of possible four stars, a rating that survey organisers IMRG explains means: “Dreadful, don’t waste your time.”

According to Datamonitor, the UK online grocery market clocked up sales worth £398m last year. Of this, in value sales, Sainsbury rated second with £42m. The leading online operator, Tesco, grossed sales of £210m.

IMRG maintains that Sainsbury is the worst of the online grocers, however, as main rivals Tesco, Asda and Iceland were each awarded full points with four stars.

Other sites run by smaller companies were also given positive reviews by IMRG. The researcher concluded that FoodFerry.com is “a good site for organic produce” with “excellent e-mail response times and service.”
