Aventis CropScience is refusing to pay US$2m in informal compensation after its genetically modified corn only licensed for livestock feed found its way into corn chips last autumn. The seed, called StarLink, is not approved for human consumption because it contains a gene that makes a protein for fighting insects. It is feared that this gene may prompt an allergic reaction in consumers.
Nebraska Corn Board chairman, Doug Boisen (corr) had asked the company to contribute US$1m both to the US Grains Council (USGC) and to the National Corn Growers Association (NGCA). The contributions were to help defray the cost of regaining lost markets and to regain consumer confidence.
