Food standards authorities in Australia and New Zealand have launched a “comprehensive” review of food labelling policy in a bid to cut red tape.

The Council of Australian Governments (COAG) and the Australia and New Zealand Food Regulation Ministerial Council (Ministerial Council) have agreed to consider options to reduce the “regulatory burden” of food labelling without “compromising public health and safety”, the agencies said in a statement.

The chair of the Ministerial Council, Australian parliamentary secretary for health Mark Butler, announced that former Australian health minister, Dr Neal Blewett, will head up the independent panel responsible for the review.

The first round of public consultation will remain open to submissions until 20 November.
