A government decision on the vaccination is imminent after supermarket retailers said they would stock meat and milk products from vaccinated livestock. The Food Standards Agency has confirmed that there in no risk for humans from eating vaccinated livestock product, but the MLC believe a media campaign may be needed to address public concern.

“If the idea is to vaccinate healthy animals and slaughter them for the food chain there might be a public concern issue,” said an MLC spokesman. “I don’t think the public will be worried about it but it could be a matter for public education.”

A vaccination programme would hit Britain’s efforts to export meat and dairy produce abroad, but would not directly affect the home market. The MLC has previously run campaigns to encourage consumers to buy British beef, pork and other meats.
