Workers at Supervalu-owned Albertsons, Kroger’s Ralphs and Safeway’s Vons and Pavilions chains were voting on Sunday whether to give union leaders the authority to call a strike in the event that the already stalled negotiations with employers break down altogether.
“We had a really, really high turnout,” said Mike Shimpock, spokesman for the United Food and Commercial Workers’ union. “Our members were very motivated to send the companies a message it’s not satisfied with what’s on the table and with how long the negotiations have been going on.” Union officials expect the strike call to be passed.
The vote was called by the union last Thursday (21 June) when it said that negotiations had failed to yield a comprehensive offer from employers.
