The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) today indicated that
it was concerned by plans for Australia’s largest supermarket chain Woolworths
to take 80 stores in the break-up of rival Franklins. The commission said
it had begun examining a list of the 80 stores Woolworths was seeking to
acquire.

"We are looking at each of them in each area and we are also looking at
it more globally because it would further increase the power of the two big
supermarket chains," ACCC chairman Professor Allan Fels told ABC radio.
"We’re very concerned about dominance in such an important sector."
