Patients under the care of the National Health Service (NHS) can soon expect a selection of gourmet “chef’s specials” during their stay in hospital. The Department of Health is spending £40m in a bid to revitalise hospital food. The new improved menu will be available in part from August, while a full range of meals will be offered by the end of this year.

CEO of the NHS, Nigel Crisp, commented: “We want to see a transformation in the quality and style of food served in hospitals. With the help of some of the UK’s leading chefs, we have created a range of exciting and tasty dishes that should be a benefit for patients.”

Hospital food has long been the butt of jokes for its poor taste and quality. It was not so funny however after a report published last year found that up to 40% of patients in hospital are malnourished. The report also found that 10% of patients would recover more quickly if the food was more nutritious, and that of the £500m spent on 300m NHS meals every year, £45m worth of food is thrown away.

The improved menu is the result of a collaboration between nutritionists, dieticians, patients and several high profile chefs, including “Masterchef” host Lloyd Grossman and Anton Edelmann, head chef at the Savoy Hotel in London. It is set to offer dishes such as Butter Bean and Bacon Soup, Salad of Spinach, Tuna, Egg and Mung Beans, Roast Cod with Garlic Potato Puree and Leek and Mushroom Sauce and Steak and Kidney Pie with Olive Oil mash.
