Turners & Growers (T&G), the New Zealand fresh produce group, has launched a fresh attack on kiwifruit export monopoly Zespri.
In a 40-page report, T&G, which is fighting to open up New Zealand’s kiwifruit sector, claimed that Zespri’s policy of “looking after” shareholder interests hits returns for growers.
The report, titled ‘How good a job is Zespri actually doing?‘ is T&G’s latest critique of Zespri’s position as New Zealand’s sole exporter of kiwifruit t markets outside Australia.
Despite signs of some public support for Zespri, the T&G report insists that the presence of a monopoly exporter despresses returns, drives up costs for growers, hits innovation and causes poor business performance.
In July, T&G filed proceedings in Auckland’s High Court, claiming Zespri had illegally abused its dominant market position.
