The company said yesterday (21 September) that the plant will “enhance” its ability to respond to the growing consumer preference for powdered infant formula products.

It will create around 35 positions and will be housed in buildings located on the Mead Johnson Evansville campus. Existing space will be renovated and new manufacturing equipment will be installed to accommodate production needs.

Construction on the 32,000 square foot facility is scheduled to begin later this year and production is expected to start later in 2010.

“The new manufacturing capability will allow us to better meet consumers’ needs and help fulfil our mission to provide nutritional brands and products trusted to give infants and children the best start in life,” said Mead Johnson senior vice president, global supply chain, Jeff Jobe. “The facility will create greater operational diversification and flexibility in our global supply chain network.”

Jobe added that the operation will be a first for the site, which traditionally has produced liquid products. The decision to locate the production facility in Evansville was based in part on tax incentives from the State of Indiana and the City of Evansville.
