The dairy goat industry will not be de-regulated by default in the wake of the mega merger between the New Zealand Dairy Board (NZDB) and Australian firm Bonlac next month. The news, coming at a meeting with politicians in Wellington, has come as a relief to the industry.

Dave Stanley, CEO of the Hamilton-based Dairy Goat Co-operative, a farmer co-operative that grosses annual export earnings of over NZ $30 million, explained that with the merger will come the repeal of the Dairy Board Act, and the industry was concerned it would be sidelined.

“At the moment Treasury is very strongly of the belief that the time is right for a fully deregulated approach, but my own view is you have to approach each industry in its own right,” he said: “The dairy cow industry has been going for 120 years and is in a very different position to the dairy goat industry that’s been going for 20 years. We’re not asking for new regulations to support us, just continuation of existing legislation.”

At the meeting, politicians revealed that the government is not yet convinced that each agri-industry should have separate legislation but it has not ruled it out.

Stanley commented: “I guess the message that we’ve got is that our position is being heard and the Government is looking to find a way to work with us on this.”
