Tyler will replace Philip Hampton, The Sunday Telegraph reported, who is leaving to focus on his role as chairman of Royal Bank of Scotland.

With nine years of experience as finance director of GUS, the former conglomerate that once owned Argos, Experian and Burberry, Tyler is also chairman of IT services group Logica.

It is understood the appointment had been approved by shareholders.

Sainsbury declined to comment, while Logica refused to confirm the reports.
