A delegation of shrimp farmers from Thailand is set to ask Chinese Prime Minister Zhu Rongji to review China’s import tariffs on frozen shrimp, which are currently set at 52.1%.

The delegation, comprising of spokesmen for The Black Tiger Shrimp Farmers Products and Export Association (BTSFPEA) and the Marine Shrimp Farmers Association (MSFA), will meet with Zhu next Monday, during his state visit to Thailand.

Thanan Sovanapreecha, president of the BTSFPEA, commented that it is important for the Thai shrimp industry to boost export quantities at a time of decreasing prices: “China is one of Thailand’s important export markets for shrimp products. High import tariffs affect not only Thai exporters, but also Chinese consumers.”

He added that since the current tariff was introduced in 1999, exports to China have plunged by nearly 50%.
