“The food industry is responding very positively to calls to remove these six colourings,” a spokesperson for the Food Standards Agency observed. “The voluntarily approach to removing colourings is working.”

The six colourings, which were identified in a study by Southampton University financed by the FSA, are sunset yellow FCF (E110), quinoline yellow (E104), carmoisine (E122), allura red (E129), tartrazine (E102) and ponceau 4R (E124).

Supermarket chain Sainsbury’s and five food companies – including Mr Lucky Bags, Paramount 21 and Tricky Treats – have joined those already committed to the ban.
