For the 12 weeks to 21 April, Waitrose saw sales jump almost 25% to GBP78.8m (US$157.8m), according to figures released by the company’s parent, The John Lewis Partnership.

“Sunshine drove sales well ahead of budget,” Waitrose said. “There were strong sales of barbecue, soft fruits and salads as well as wines and beers as the French wine and cheese showcase entered its second week.”

Earlier this week, Waitrose saw managing director Steven Esom resign and take up a post as director of food at rival retailer Marks & Spencer.
