Emergency import restrictions placed on Chinese garlic by the South Korean government may be lifted tomorrow, according to the Trade Commission, of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy.

Imposed last June in a bid to protect the domestic garlic industry from cheap imports, the safeguards have prompted a strong backlash from China. The country banned the importation of petrochemical products and mobile phone accessories manufactured in Korea, claiming that it had violated trade relations.


A firm decision on whether to lift the garlic measures was originally due on 30 May, however Korean officials within the Trade Commission could not reach clear consensus.
