The Produce Marketing Association (PMA) is to spend US$2m to help set up a research body to study product safety in the US.

The PMA, which represents the produce industry in 44 countries, said yesterday (11 April) that the research institute would be based at the University of California, Davis. Taylor Farms, a US-based fresh produce supplier, has also pledged US$2m towards the project.


“The success of the produce industry depends on our collective commitment to public health,” said PMA president Bryan Silbermann.


The institute, to be named the Center for Produce Safety, will becomes a “clearinghouse” for research into produce safety. The body will also fund research into reduce the risks around produce supply in the US.
