Buger behemoths McDonald’s and Buger King, as well as fast-casual dining chain Wendy’s International, were named by the authorities but have denied the claims.

Two Guatemalan chains, including Pollo Campero, were also accused of failing to produce the official receipts that government officials use to collect taxes.

The government has threatened to close the restaurants that fail to comply with the tax law, a new version of which was introduced on 1 January this year.

The chains say that they have complied with the laws, but in some cases have faced difficulties. Jacinto Cornejo, operations manager for Wendy’s in Guatemala, insisted staff members were told to hand over the fiscal receipts, but that many clients refused to provide their name and identification number, both of which are essential to issue the tickets.
