The Key Performance Indicators Survey is a comprehensive investigation into how efficiently food is transported around the UK. It will show how full they are, how many miles they run empty, and the effect on their operations of traffic and loading or unloading delays. It will also show how much produce is moved how far, how much fuel is used and how much CO2 is being released.

The survey is the largest of its kind undertaken in the UK. DfT said the study will provide a measure of the effectiveness of the use of transport in the food industry from manufacturers, through distribution centres, to the final retailer.
