Ministers from the 15 EU member governments have slashed the proposed representation of the European Commission on the management board that will run the new European Food Authority (EFA).

Instead of four members on the 16-member panel, ministers granted the Commission only one because the board “should secure the highest standards of competence and the broadest possible geographic distribution within the EU.”


Clearly disappointed, the Commission said yesterday: “Further reflection on this matter should lead to an acceptable convergence of the views of the different institutions in the subsequent stages of the legislative process.”


The European Parliament, which has co-decision powers, still has to have a final say on the matter.


Ministers have meanwhile supported the Commission’s “farm-to-fork” approach to food safety, though no decision has been made on where the EFA should be located.
