The German retail giant has agreed to buy two stores in Cologne and a pair of supermarkets in Aachen from Delhaize for an undisclosed sum.

Delhaize, which will now quit the German market, said the stores had made a “small” operating loss in 2008, despite sales of EUR19.5m (US$27.3m) last year.

However, Rewe said the deal would strengthen its business. “With this takeover we can further strengthen our position in two important cities on our domestic market,” Rewe executive Lionel Souque said.
