Sainsbury’s has said that the number of products in its Basics range costing GBP1 (US$1.6) or less has hit an all-time high.

A spokesperson for the UK retailer told just-food that, of the 650 products in the Basics range, around 400 are now priced at GBP1 or under.

Of these, 200 products cost less that 50 pence, the spokesperson added.

“This is the highest number of Basics products costing less than a pound that we have ever offered,” the spokesperson commented.

Sales of the Basics range have propelled Sainsbury’s sales and market share growth. When the company unveiling like-for-like sales growth of 4.5% for fiscal 2009 in March, Sainsbury’s said that it saw its Basics sales grow by 60% over the 12-month period.
