US food group Kellogg Company has announced that it has elected Sterling Speirn, president and CEO of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, to its board of directors.

Speirn was president and CEO of Peninsula Community Foundation for 15 years before taking up his position at the W.K. Kellogg Foundation in January 2006.

“Sterling will be a valuable addition to our board,” said Kellogg chairman Jim Jenness. “His varied professional experience, leadership in the philanthropic field and personal commitment to carry on the legacy established by our founder, W.K. Kellogg, will benefit Kellogg Company greatly.”

Having previously taught at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Speirn was a co-creator and former board member of the Raising A Reader take-home book bag programme, which earned a Fast Company Social Entrepreneurship Award for 2006. He has also been a guest lecturer at Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, Harvard Business School, University of Santa Clara, University of San Francisco and the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
