French farmers unions have been called to discussions with government ministers tomorrow (13 June), as around 7,000 of their members blocked 41 distribution platforms today protesting retailers’ margins on food products.

Discussions will focus largely on “transparency in the formulation of food prices”, the union said.
Meanwhile, in Brittany a union source told just-food that yesterday’s talks saw some of the region’s retailers indicate their readiness to pay local dairy farmers EUR0.10 for each litre of milk sold at their hyper or supermarket, for a period of up to three months, in return for the lifting of the blockades. Increasing the retail price would fund the measure.
“There is nothing trivial about this offer as the retailers are desperate to have the blockades lifted. But we were representing our members from all sectors at this meeting (not just dairy farmers) and on top of this, it was rather too easy for them to say that the consumers would be paying for it,” the source said.
The blockades are set to remain in place until Saturday evening.
