Cheese makers are angry over a UK government decision to ban television advertising of cheese to children because it has been classified as a fatty food potentially promoting obesity.
The outrage follows a decision by the UK’s Office of Communications (Ofcom) to prohibit the advertising of food and drink products that are high in fat, salt and sugar during programming appealing to children under 16.
Ofcom asked the UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) to determine which products were affected by the ban and found a 100-gram serving size of cheese was over the limit for it to be considered healthy.
However, the British Cheese Board claims this is nonsense, saying a normal serving should be between 30 grams and 40 grams and that the amount used to determine its nutritional make-up was too large.
It added that when eaten in moderation, cheese is a vital source of calcium, crucial for developing strong bones and teeth.
