A European Parliament report has suggested that European Union (EU) legislation could ban the marketing of sugary fatty foods to young people, should the EU food industry continue such advertising.

A paper by Belgian Liberal MEP Frédérique Ries has suggested the food industry be asked via the existing EU Platform for Action on Diet, Physical Activity and Health to self-regulate marketing.


However, should that fail, the Commission should: “come forward with legislative proposals…to end the promotion of foods high in fat, sugar and salt to children”, said Ries. His report, entitled ‘Promoting Healthy Diets and Physical Activity’, also called for better national funding of nutritious school meals.
