The Japanese Chain Stores Association has revealed that supermarket sales declined 3.8% in December, the 12th consecutive month of year-on-year decline.

Same-store sales for the month dropped to JPY411tn (US$3.39tn). Including stores opened in the past year, sales declined by 2%.


Food sales, which account for 58.2% of revenue, fell 1.2%. Sales of household goods dropped 0.8%, clothing sales were down 9.9% and sales of services fell 44.5%.


For 2006, comparable supermarket sales declined 2.7%.
