Tesco has commissioned what has been billed as the world’s largest solar-panel – a US$13m 2 MW BIPV roofing system to be installed at Tesco USA’s distribution center under construction in Riverside, California.

UK retailer Tesco is set to make its US debut when it opens stores on the West Coast of America this year. The grocer has remained guarded about its plans, stating that it wants US consumers to be the first to see what it has to offer.

Los Angeles-based Solar Integrated Technologies said today it had been awarded the contract to construct the solar roofing system.

“We believe this will be the largest roof-mounted solar installation in the world,” R. Randall MacEwen, Solar Integrated’s president and CEO said. “We are thrilled to partner with Tesco USA on their exciting entry into the US market. Tesco has a strong commitment to being a leader in helping to create a low carbon economy. Our BIPV roofing system at this distribution center will produce over 2.6m kilowatt hours per annum, provide a fifth of the depot’s power supply, and save 1,200 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year.”

Tesco yesterday (17 January) unveiled a raft of new measures to combat climate change, including plans to reduce carbon emissions and encourage consumers to be more environmentally responsible.
