US food group Sara Lee is to open a sliced meat manufacturing facility in Kansas City with the creation of 250 jobs.

The US$130m 187,000 square foot facility will allow Sara Lee to develop “industry-leading technological processes” and give it the capacity for “long-term growth in the meat business”, the company said today (29 May).

“This industry-leading facility will reinforce our competitive advantage in value-added meats, one of Sara Lee’s top strategic categories and long-term growth drivers,” said CJ Fraleigh, CEO of Sara Lee’s North American Retail & Foodservice division.

“It will help us further build our Hillshire Farm and Sara Lee brands, both leaders in the fast-growing category of premium lunchmeat.”

Unified Government Mayor Joe Reardon added: “This is a public/private partnership that creates new jobs for our outstanding workforce at a critical time given our current economy.”

Last week, Sara Lee filed a hot dog lawsuit against fellow US food giant Kraft Foods’ Oscar Mayer business.
