New French regulations, which came into effect at the beginning of this year, allow retailers to advertise on traditional television channels. Prices are allowed to be mentioned – but only if they are held for 15 weeks or more. Temporary offers cannot be highlighted.

The world’s second largest retailer will begin airing commercials on French television on Friday, French newspaper Les Echos reported.

The news comes after Carrefour reported fourth quarter sales that came in below expectations, leading several brokers to downgrade the French retailer’s stock and sending share prices tumbling. The poor sales results in its core French market, Carrefour said, were the consequence of a number of factors, including competition on price.
