Safeway has appointed Steve Webb to its Operations Board as Corporate Development Director.

As well as retaining his existing responsibilities for corporate strategy and investor relations, Steve will head up new business development, which includes Safeway’s links with BP, Abbey National, the European trading body AMS and the Worldwide Retail Exchange.

Carlos Criado-Perez, Safeway’s Chief Executive, said “I am confident that Steve’s in-depth knowledge and experience of the industry will further strengthen our senior operations team.”

Steve graduated from Durham University with an Economics Degree. He gained several years experience in food retailing research, partly as a brokers analyst with Lehman Brothers, having begun his career at the Institute of Grocery Distribution (IGD).

He joined the Argyll Group plc in 1988 in a Corporate Development role and in 1991 was appointed Investor Relations Director, reporting to David Webster (then Deputy Chairman).

In 1995 he assumed the role of Director of Corporate Development within the renamed Safeway plc, retaining overall responsibility for Investor Relations.

Steve is married with two children and is aged 42.
