The company said yesterday (8 April) that the products contain raw shelled pistachios supplied by Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, the California-based firm at the centre of the latest food scare to hit the US.

The products include raw mixed nuts sold under the Archer Farms brand thought Target Corp. stores.

The recall also takes in bulk, unbranded 5lb whole pistachio kernels shipped to foodservice distributors, as well as Fisher Natural pistachio kernels, plus bulk whole pistachio kernels under the Fisher brand.

Sanfilippo said it had received one confirmed report of illness, although any link to the company’s products has so far proved “inconclusive”.

Earlier this week, the US Food and Drug Administration said an inspection had indicated salmonella was present in “critical areas” of the Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella facility in California.

The FDA said the investigation had found the “potential for cross-contamination between raw and roasted peanuts”.

Once Setton heard of the inspection’s findings, the company expanded its recall of pistachios processed at the plant.
