The European Parliament has overwhelmingly passed amendments to proposed reforms of the EU’s novel food regulation, forcing food manufacturers to state explicitly if their products contain nanoparticles.
In a sign of rising environmental health concerns about nanotechnology, MEPs also voted for a rule stipulating “nanotechnology processes…will need specific risk assessment methods”.
They said meat and dairy products made from cloned animals should be subject to a completely different set of EU food controls.
The EU Council of Ministers – which shares veto rights with the parliament – will now debate the proposals.
The legislation is expected to receive formal approval this year.
