The demand came as tense negotiations continued this week between Russia and the US over the banning of imports last Sunday after some were found to be contaminated with the food poisoning bacteria salmonella.
The US poultry industry, which generates between US$600m and US$700m a year in sales to Russia, claims that the ban is un justified scientifically. Many accuse Russia of trade protectionism.
Officials in Moscow meanwhile say that they are concerned about the sanitary conditions in US plants, which might breed salmonella, and the industry’s use of antibiotics and feed additives. Mikhail Kravchuk, Russia’s chief veterinary inspector, has asked that delegations be allowed to inspect US plants that have shipped low-quality poultry to Russia or have failed to produce required delivery documents.
