This merger will bring together Lawson’s management resources under one entity with a view to establish a high-growth fresh food convenience store format, the company said.

By focusing on its fresh offering, Lawson said that it would be able to differentiate itself from other convenience operators in Japan.

Ninety-nine Plus and Value Lawson operate the Shop99 and Lawson Store100 brands. The management of each has previously cooperated to jointly develop the Lawson own label Value Line, rationalise distribution and establish a new franchise agreement, to come into effect for all franchisees from 2009.

Under this collaboration a number of Shop99 stores have already been converted to the Lawson Store100 banner, Lawson revealed.

The company said that the move will enable it to step-up the development of distinctive products centred on the private brand Value Line.

The move is not expected to have an impact on Lawson’s full-year results for the fiscal ended 28 February 2009, while the impact on fiscal 2010 is expected to be “negligible”.
