The company currently operates SuperCenter grocery and general merchandise stores, which range from 140,000ft² to 190,000ft². Within the walls of these Kmart says it will add smaller grocery outlets ranging between 100,000ft² and 140,000ft², and carrying 40,000 food items.

Kmart says it hopes to offer 15 new and renovated SuperCentre “store-within-a-store” formats by the end of November, raising the total number of Kmart SuperCenters to 124. Each store renovation will create between 200 and 350 new jobs.

Chuck Conaway, company chairman and CEO, commented: “We’re excited about the possibilities of our ‘in-the-box’ conversions to SuperCenters.

“Right now our plans to go slow and test these openings as test cases. But we believe that we have anywhere from 1,000 to 1,300 stores that could be converted to SuperCenters.”
