The act of chewing gum can help improve a person’s ability to recall lists of words.

Dr Andrew Scholey, a neuroscientist at the University of Northumbria, revealed that in a recent trial, volunteers who chewed gum had a third greater chance of remembering a list of words than their non-gum chewing counterparts.

Dr Scholey has admitted that he is not sure why chewing gum should have such an impact on memory, but suggested that it might speed the processes up because the chewing action raises the heart rate and pumps more blood through the brain.
