Brazil is set to become the world’s third largest wheat exporter this year, as data from the country’s rural economics department, Deral, sees the country exporting five million tonnes of wheat during the whole of 2001.

This year is also the first that Brazil has exported any wheat since its 1996 harvest.

Catie Bueno de Godoy, an agricultural engineer at Deral, told the local newspaper Gazeta Mercantil, that farmers are exporting more due to higher international prices. Godoy added that Brazil’s wheat harvest has found many global buyers because it is GM-free: “This characteristic was important to gain market access, as is the competitive price.”
