UK-based organic body The Soil Association has dropped plans to ban airfreighted goods from inclusion in its organic certification scheme.

The Soil Association said that, following a “lengthy consultation process” on proposed new labelling standards, the body had decided to include foods transported by air.


“Having completed the second stage of our consultation, which looked at over 300 responses… we came to the conclusion that it was better to work with African producers on airfreight issues,” the spokesperson said.


The spokesperson emphasised that airfreight is “not used widely”, with less than 1% of organic food transported by air.
