Kellogg has confirmed that salmonella has been found in one package of its Austin crackers amid the ongoing peanut butter scare in the US.

The company said yesterday (19 January) that the US Food and Drug Administration had found traces of salmonella in a package of Austin Quality Foods Toasty Crackers.
The product had already been recalled by Kellogg among a raft of similar moves by US food manufactures and retailers in the wake of the recall from Peanut Corporation of America (PCA).
President and CEO David Mackay expressed Kellogg’s “deep regret” at the discovery of salmonella in one of the company’s products.
“Events of the last week suggest there was a breach in this supplier’s process that is unacceptable to Kellogg, our customers and our consumers,” Mackay said. “Kellogg will evaluate its processes to ensure we take necessary actions to reassure consumers and rebuild confidence in these products.”

By GlobalDataOn Friday evening, Kellogg recalled 16 lines after PCA, the supplier at the centre of the scare, expanded its own recall to include peanut paste and peanut butter.
To date, around 474 people have fallen ill in 43 states, and at least 90 have been hospitalised. Six deaths are being blamed on the outbreak.
Food manufacturers have been busy either recalling products suspected to be linked with the outbreak or issuing statements insisting their brands are unaffected.
Yesterday, General Mills issued a recall of Lärabar peanut butter cookie flavour snack bars and JamFrakas peanut butter blisscrisp flavour snack bars because peanut butter in the products was sourced from PCA.
Meanwhile, Lance, the US snack maker, said its sandwich crackers are not part of the peanut butter recall.
