German discount retailer Aldi is planning to expand its US footprint with the opening of an additional 75 stores in 2009.

New stores will be opening in the 29 states between Kansas and the East Coast where Aldi currently operates, a spokesperson for the company told just-food today (14 January).


However, the company will focus its expansion efforts in the northeast and Florida, the spokesperson added.


Each new store will be approximately 17,000 square feet in size and carry around 1,400 SKUs, covering about 90% of a typical grocery list, the spokesperson said.


Aldi focuses on providing a low prices, with approximately 95% of products being own-label. The company hopes that consumers will be drawn to its proposition as they look to save money in the economic downturn.

“All of Aldi’s US stores offer high-quality fresh produce, fresh meats and grocery items at up to 50%-less than the competition,” the spokesperson said.


Commenting on speculation that the retailer is aiming to steal consumers from US retail giant Wal-Mart, the spokesperson said: “Aldi is typically very successful in competitive markets. Aldi offers a solution to consumers looking to save money on their grocery bill without compromising on taste and quality.”
