Matthew Walker, a Northern Foods business, is to launch a sponge pudding range into UK bakery aisles in the New Year.

Scrummie is a range of microwaveable sponge puddings covered with a sauce and will be the “first branded ambient pudding range launched in the bakery aisle”, which is made with 100% butter sponge, free range eggs and no artificial ingredients, the company said today (8 December).

Five flavours include; Syrup Sponge, Stickie Toffee & Pecan Nuts, Chocolate, Spotted Dick and Cherrie Jam.

Melody Chapman, commercial director at Matthew Walker said: “Our extensive research identified a clear opportunity for a convenient and indulgent sponge pudding in bakery.

“We have a huge expertise in making traditional Christmas puddings and also make many ambient sponge puddings for retailers over the festive period. It’s a logical process to continue production throughout the year, and to develop our own brand to fulfil consumer demand.”
