Canadian organic and natural food retailer Planet Organic Health has posted a first-quarter net loss, despite a 16.7% rise in sales.

The company booked a net loss of C$701,426 (US$562,737) compared to net income of C$577,468 in the same period last year.


However, total sales for the first quarter of fiscal 2009 reached C$30m, an increase on C$25.7m reported in the corresponding quarter last year.


The Planet Organic Market division showed same-store sales growth of 19.4% for the quarter. Total revenues at the division grew from C$11.7m to C$14.6m, an increase of 24.5%.


Mrs Green’s Natural Market, Planet’s US division, showed same-store sales growth of 8% for the period.

The company noted that the two segments, Planet Organic Market segment and Mrs Greens Natural Market segment, accounted for 86% of total consolidated revenue during the latest quarter.
