The company said today (17 November) that it plans to upgrade five existing warehouses and build eleven more, taking the total number of depots to 38.

CEO Josef Sanktjohanser said the investment would make Rewe’s domestic logistics network more efficient and cater for its expanding number of stores.

“High-performance logistics is the backbone of the Rewe Group,” Sanktjohanser said.

In recent months, Rewe has bought the Extra supermarket chain from Metro Group and struck a deal to buy over 300 Plus discount stores from Tengelmann.

Rewe moved to buy the Plus stores after Germany’s competition watchdog ordered fellow retail giant Edeka, which is merging its Netto discount stores with Tengelmann’s Plus business, to sell a number of the outlets to gain the go-ahead for the deal.

Rewe is still awaiting regulator approval for its acquisition of the clutch of Plus stores.
