German retailer Metro Group is planning to expand in the Serbian market through new store openings of its Metro Cash & Carry format, a spokesperson for Metro Serbia told just-food today (6 November).

Metro’s cash and carry business has been active in the Serbian market since 2004 and currently operates five outlets: two in Belgrade and one in Kragujevac, Novi Sad and Niš.

Metro’s current investment in the market stands at EUR100m (US$128.2m), a figure that is set to increase as planned new store openings go ahead.

“Metro Serbia intends to continue development and expansion, but plans for opening of new stores will be disclosed to the public when all necessary processes are finalised,” a spokesperson for Metro’s Serbian operations told just-food. “Our rule is to present only accurate information to the public and our customers.”

Metro emphasised that it is working with Serbian manufacturers and producers to supply its stores in the market.
