Sims, 52, will report directly to Larry Johnston, Albertson’s chairman and CEO, and will serve as a member of the company’s executive committee.

Previously, Sims spent 22 years with Cincinnati, Ohio-based Federated Department Stores. Federated is a US$16bn retailer with over 450 stores under several well-known banners such as Macys, Bloomingdale’s, Rich’s, Lazarus, Burdines, and the Bon Marche.

At Federated, Sims most recently served as VP and deputy general counsel, responsible for the day-to-day operations of Federated’s legal department. During his 22 years with the company, his practice included a variety of areas, including real estate law, mergers and acquisitions, regulatory matters, benefits, and employee relations.

“We are extremely fortunate to have attracted an individual with John’s credentials,” said Larry Johnston, chairman and chief executive officer. “His successful track record in M&A, corporate governance, employee relations, and litigation management will be a strong addition to the new senior leadership team we are building at Albertson’s.”
