Canada-based natural and organic food group SunOpta has struck a deal to buy US cereal-bar manufacturer Edner of Nevada.
The acquisition, agreed for an undisclosed sum, is the second announced by SunOpta in a month after a move to buy sunflower seed firm Dahlgren.
Edner co-packs for branded and private-label cereal-bar and nutrition bar companies. The business, based in Carson City, Nevada turns over around US$10m.
SunOpta has agreed to buy the business from Ed and Vicky Kirschner, who founded Edner’s in 2003. They plan to stay on “for a period of time” to “grow” and “integrate” the firm, Chris Bouchard, president of SunOpta’s healthy fruit snacks division said.
“Edner is well respected for the innovative products they produce along with their extensive formulation capabilities. We believe we will be able to expand revenues significantly without significant additional capital investment and broaden our product offering with our existing customers,” Bouchard said.
Ed Kirschner added: “We are pleased to enter into this transaction with SunOpta and to remain engaged with the business, leveraging our joint capabilities. We believe SunOpta provides an excellent platform and fit with Edner’s common values and commitment to product innovation and customer service.”
