The facility will create over 100 permanent and contract jobs in York, a spokesperson for the company confirmed toady (17 October).

Co-packers combine product, sometimes from different manufacturing locations, in one pack – for example Christmas selection boxes or supermarket displays.

The new venture will significantly reduce the need to transport stock intended for co-packing around the country, the company said.

The move could cut the need for around 4,000 lorry loads per year, saving about 300,000 road miles, Nestlé emphasised.

“We are continually looking for ways to reduce our impact on the environment so rather than moving stock backwards and forwards around the country it makes sound environmental and business sense to bring the co-packing to one of Nestlé’s largest distribution centres. We are delighted that this will bring new jobs to the city of York,” Nestlé Confectionery (UK) managing director Paul Grimwood said in a statement.
