The latest BRC-Nielsen shop price index, released today, shows that overall shop price inflation stood at 3.6% in September, down from 3.8% in August.


Overall inflation can mostly be attributed to food, with ambient and fresh categories increasing by 6.7% and 10.7%, respectively, the BRC said.


However, Richard Dodd of the BRC was quick to emphasise that the rate of food inflation is slowing.


“Food inflation is starting to slow,” he told just-food.

Moreover, Dodd added that food inflation has not artificially boosted food retailers’ sales figures.


“Food sales are one of the main drivers for overall retail growth. It is one of the sectors that is holding up quite well under the current difficult trading conditions,” he said.
